Review: Brobo ToyJuly 29th, 2013
Awhile back, Jeff from Brobo asked me if I’d like to participate in a review of his new product. While I almost never do reviews, because I find them time consuming and often the products aren’t of interest to me, I was interested in the Brobo. Partly because it’s a Canadian brand, and I always like to support local talent, but also because the toys looked pretty cool and I thought Everly would like them. I mean, what isn’t to like about a light up robot?
When they first arrived in the mail, I have to admit they were bigger than I anticipated. I don’t know what I was expecting, but for some reason I had envisioned a smaller toy. We were sent 2 of these, which is perfect because Everly like everyone to have a friend, and sharing.
The first one I opened was the Brobo Shine Force, which is the original version of the toy. He’s very very soft with big bright eyes and of course, the light up tummy. I barely had him out of the box before Everly was grabbing at him. She just kept asking what it was and then laughing manically. I let her have Brobo while I opened my second box, in which I found my personal favourite, the Mumu Shine Force. Now, Mumu rocks headphones and is a robot mummy, which is awesome. When I was asked which of the dolls I preferred to receive, Mumu was the one I originally chose. However, I’m so thrilled we got both because Brobo himself actually matches Everly’s room perfectly, and the dolls are best friends.
Once they were out of the boxes, Everly took them upstairs to show them their new room. She was really excited by these guys and this was BEFORE I even showed her that they could light up. She just kept hugging them and telling me they were “so so soft”. I told her I had to do something to them and put the batteries in (which was easy as pie) and then I took her into her pitch black closet and showed her how they worked. To light them up, you swipe their right hand over the pad on their belly – that’s it. Do it twice to turn down the brightness and a third swipe will turn off the light all together. If they are left on, they will turn themselves off after 5 minutes.
She immediately loved them. I basically lost her to the closet for the rest of the evening, and several subsequent evenings as well. They quickly became part of her group of “sleep friends” and I often see her on the monitor playing with them when she should be sleeping (which go for it kid, as long as you’re not crying do what you will!). I thought she might change her mind on them when the novelty wore off but it’s been several months and she’s still displaying them prominently on her bed. When we’ve headed out of town she’s INSISTED on bringing them with her, because they help her feel better in strange places. She isn’t really afraid of the dark per se but, I think having these light up buddies helps her feel more in control over strange situations. When we were away a few weeks back, she was using them to navigate across the hallway of an unfamiliar house when she had to go pee. When friends are over, she always shares one with them and then I’ll find them tucked into the closet just lighting them up or turning them off.
These light up dudes are really fun, and I think that any kid would get a kick out of the little vibrating light up friends. I wasn’t convinced on them at the start; I thought she would like them but I didn’t think they would become such a big deal. However, the combination of light up and buzzing bellies that she can control, how cute they look, and their funny little names, and we’ve got a Brobo lover in the house. I highly recommend giving them a try for your kid, or as a unique gift option for a kid in your life.
